BURGLARS LEAVE BEHIND SHIRT AND GLOVE

Burglars got away with televisions, jewelry and lawn equipment when they broke into a vacationing couple’s empty house near New Smyrna Beach, but they left behind clues that Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators hope will identify the culprits. Investigators are asking anyone who might recognize a shirt and glove discovered at the burglary scene to come forward with any information that could help solve the case.

The burglary was reported August 15 by the mother of one of the victims who was out of town on vacation. The woman was caring for the home in the 4000 block of Pioneer Way. When she stopped by the house that morning she saw that the rear sliding glass door was broken. She immediately reported the find to the Sheriff’s Office, and responding deputies discovered that the entire home had been ransacked. In addition to many possessions missing from the home, the victims’ truck was also gone. However, the truck was found abandoned down the street, and several blankets and sheets in it indicated that it may have been used to transport the stolen goods, which included tools, a generator and power tools.

There were two items at the scene that didn’t belong to the victims and may have been left behind by the thieves. One is a dark blue, sleeveless T-shirt with the words “Deltona All Stars” on the front and the number 8 on the back. The other item is an orange and gray work glove with the words “Syracuse Workmen” written on it with a marker.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Investigator Beth Fortin at (386) 423-3301 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida, toll-free, at (888) 277-TIPS. Tipsters can also provide information by texting “TIP231 plus the message” to CRIMES. Anyone who provides information to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
