MAN INJURED IN DELEON SPRINGS SHOOTING

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting Saturday night in DeLeon Springs that injured a 33-year-old man.

Deputies were initially dispatched to the area of Katrina Street at 7:18 p.m. after a resident called 911 to report hearing a commotion in the street and a possible gunshot. The caller said that after the disturbance, several people fled the area in a van. Deputies quickly responded, but everyone had already left the area. However, a few minutes later the Sheriff’s Office got a call from Florida Hospital DeLand saying a man was being treated in the emergency room for a gunshot wound. The victim, who was brought there by someone in a van, was later transferred to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

Deputies have recovered a gun and are still trying to sort out the circumstances of the shooting. More information will be released as it becomes available.

UPDATE: 09/27/09 - 5:22 a.m.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office was notified by personnel at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach at approximately 4:50 Sunday morning that the DeLeon Springs shooting victim had died. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The Sheriff's Office's major case unit is continuing the investigation.

UPDATE: 09/28/09 - 2:17 p.m.

The victim in the Saturday night DeLeon Springs shooting is 33-year-old Chabelo Ramirez-Secundino from Crescent City. An autopsy was performed Monday morning confirming the cause of death as a shooting. The gun recovered on Saturday does not appear to be the weapon Ramirez-Secundino was shot with.
