Never stay
in a mobile home during a hurricane or tornado. Because tornadoes strike with only limited
warning, emergency shelters realistically cannot be opened in time.
Mobile homes can be dangerous during hurricanes and
tornadoes because their flat sides and light weight make them extremely vulnerable to
damage from high winds. This type of construction does not allow the proper transfer of
the wind load through the supports into the foundation and the ground.
If threatened by a major storm you should seek shelter
elsewhere.
- Make a plan to stay with friends or family.
- Be sure to tell other friends or family members where you
are planning to go.
- Prepare a disaster supply kit and keep it handy.
- Obtain a NOAA weather radio with an alarm feature.
- Have your tie-down straps and anchors regularly maintained.
- Check straps for rust or corrosion.
- Cover windows and doors to prevent flying debris from
crashing through the glass and creating an opening.
