1868
- The first traffic signals (semaphores) were installed in London, England.
1896 - The first recorded auto accident in the United States was in New
York City.
1899 - The first traffic fatality in the U.S. was in New York City.
1911 - The first centerline pavement marking in the U.S. was in Michigan.
1914 - The first electric traffic signal in the U.S. was in the City of
Cleveland.
1915 - The first stop sign was installed in Detroit.
1919 - The first bronze towers installed to house electric traffic
signals were in New York City. 1935 - The first edition of the "Manual on Uniform
Traffic Control Devices" (MUTCD) was published.
